'Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with [God]...' Genesis 35:14 NKJ
Do you like looking at your holiday pics to remember the good times you've had away from home? It's great to look back and remember, especially when it's one of those 'miserable Mondays'. Looking back and remembering good times can really cheer us up-laughing at the clothes we used to wear; seeing our mates being silly; remembering all the different places we've been and experiences we've had.
Did you know that words for 'remember' are mentioned well over 200 times in the Bible? It is important to God that we 'remember the days of long ago.' (Deuteronomy 32:7 NLT)
They didn't have photographs in Bible times so they used other things to help them remember good times. For example, 'Jacob set up a stone pillar to mark the place where God had spoken' (Genesis 35:14 NLT); 'The people of Reuben and Gad named the altar "Witness", for they said, "It is a witness between us and them that the Lord is our God, too."' (Joshua 22:34 NLT); 'Samuel took a stone...set it up...and called [it]...Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the Lord has helped us."' (1 Samuel 7:12 NKJ); 'Jacob presented a sacrifice to God and invited everyone to a feast.' (Genesis 31:54 NLT)
When we're in a spiritual slump it helps us get back on track when we look back and remember all the great things God has done. Remembering God's promises (over 3000 of them) fills us with hope again. God's promises are like the stars-the darker the night, the brighter they shine.
