'Don't let anyone look down on you...' 1 Timothy 4:12 NIV
You can't live a life that's not your own. It's really important to accept the guidance of others, and to take on board any gentle nudges (or steel-toed kicks too, come to think of it) God might give to you through your fellow human beings. However, it's not up to other people to determine what's for you and what isn't. Just because your parents want you to be a doctor, doesn't automatically mean that's what God wants. You've got to have an open enough mind for God to guide you to what you should be doing, even if it's entirely different to what your friends and family think you should be doing.
The world defines 'success' differently from God. The most successful person in God's Kingdom isn't necessarily a CEO in an Armani suit. So, defy the world's expectations. God does. Paul told Timothy, 'Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young,' because people thought Timothy was an inexperienced kid. It's easy to let other people decide what your life should look like, and just assume they're right because they're older or cleverer or genuinely lovely. But Paul thought differently; and so does God. So get God's opinion. In the end it's the only one that counts.
