'...The Lord does not look at the things man looks at...' 1 Samuel 16:7 NIV
God had David earmarked for King. However, his own family didn't see any royal potential. A prophet called Samuel came to his family home, looking for the guy who was to be King. David's dad showed Samuel the eldest son, Eliab.
Eliab looked pretty impressive - he was a general in the army. Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, 'Surely the Lord's anointed stands here...' But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."' (1 Samuel 16: 6-7 NIV)
It would've been easy for David to give up and settle into the role of musically-talented little brother. But he didn't. He grew into God's call for him - to be a king - and outran the expectations of his family. He went on to do astounding things for God. It can be tough when the people around you tie you up with their expectations. But if you ask God to show you His opinion, you'll have the power to shake off those expectations. You'll see you were made by the Master of all craft to be a prized and powerful creature. If you give yourself over to His opinions, you'll see that you are a custom-crafted piece of the most valued design in nature.
